Are Job-Seeking Graduates Overlooking This Hidden Sector?

With global attention fixed on the Strait of Hormuz, the Transport, Shipping, and Logistics  sector is no longer just “behind the scenes.” This industry offers high-impact roles, rapid career progression, and constant technological innovation, and clearly, challenge and excitement.  Yet it remains a “hidden” sector for many job-seeking graduates.

One of the industry’s best-kept secrets is that you don’t need a specialized degree to launch a high-impact career. Roles such as Freight Forwarding Agents, Customs Operations Executives, Project Coordinators, and Supply Chain Analysts are open to graduates from all academic backgrounds. If you possess sharp analytical thinking, AI literacy, strong communication/teamworking skills, and the ability to thrive in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments, this sector would welcome you.

Mature professionals seeking a career pivot should also take note. There are reportedly significant skills shortages in several specialized areas, including Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Robotics, and Automation. Furthermore, as the UK intensifies its push toward Net-Zero, expertise in sustainability and decarbonization is becoming increasingly valuable.

We all have the challenge of accessing opportunities in the “hidden job market”—particularly within SMEs –  i.e., the 70% to 80% of roles that are never advertised on traditional job boards.

So be intentional about “getting known to be in the know”.  Follow potential employers and join industry-specific groups on Linkedin. Don’t just be a passive onlooker— comment and ask questions.

Join the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and show up  regularly at their events and meetups, as well as events hosted by organizations such as  Maritime UK and Generation Logistics.

Online research has its place. But nothing beats connecting with professionals already in the trenches to get the understanding and opportunities you are after.
